Solar Eclipse 4.8.24

Our region will be in the zone of totality during the April 8 solar eclipse. Check out the video below to see the path of totality.

Path of Totality for April 8, 2024 Solar Eclipse

Our own Sam Joseph is on the St. Lawrence County Solar Eclipse Task Force and provides the following helpful tips:

1. The solar eclipse will occur April 8.

2. Totality is when the sun is completely blocked by the moon and will occur for approximately 3 minutes (depending where you are in the county)

3. Totality will start at the western part of the county at 3:23 pm and end at the eastern part of the county 3:28 (your actual totality times depends on your location in the county) For time tables based where you are: https://www.visitstlc.com/stlc-totality-viewing-timetable-2024/

4. During “totality” you can look directly at the “sun/moon” without special eclipse glasses, and it will be spectacular if not cloudy. You also will be able to see stars, the corona, and mountains on the moon.

5. You need special glasses to look at “sun/moon” immediately before and immediately after totality or you will damage your eyes.

6. You can get glasses from the SLC chamber of commerce.

7. Definitely worth looking at without the glasses, don’t be afraid to damage your eyes. Just take precautions and know when it is safe to look at and when you should be using glasses.
