By the early 1900s, there were 34 Universalist churches in St. Lawrence County. The churches in Canton, Edwards, Massena, Potsdam, and Winthrop survived the longest. The First Universalist Church of Edwards closed in 1956, Today the Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton is the only one remaining in operation.
