SLU Gallery Presentation

SPECIAL GALLERY TALK EXAMINES SOCIAL JUSTICE AND SPIRITUALITY

The Fellowship Committee invites you to a special gallery discussion, "Social Justice and Spirituality: The Journey from Art to Action, " on Sunday, February 5, at 1 p.m. at St. Lawrence University’s Richard F. Brush Art Gallery. The discussion with visiting artist Daniel Heyman is being held for members and friends of our church in conjunction with his exhibit “Bearing Witness,” which is on display at the Brush Gallery through February 29, 2012.

“Bearing Witness” consists of portraits of former detainees who were tortured at Abu Ghraib prison, along with their testimonies written verbatim on the artist's prints and drawings. Daniel writes, "For me, Art, with a capital ‘A’ has very little to do with the materials or techniques chosen by the artist, and all to do with searching for and revealing truths that need and must be faced if we together are ever to repair the world and make it whole." Visual works of art, poetry, and other forms of creative expression ask us to acknowledge and take responsibility for the pain and suffering of others.

Everyone is welcome to this special presentation; soup and sandwiches will be provided. To help with planning, please RSVP (with any dietary restrictions) to Cathy Tedford (Gallery Director, ctedford@stlawu.edu or 229-5174) by February 1.

For more information about the exhibit and directions to the gallery on the St. Lawrence campus, visit www.stlawu.edu/gallery.  Brush Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday, 12-8, and Friday-Saturday, 12-5.
