Since UShare began in 2005, we have annually delivered more than 2000 pounds of fresh, organic produce to 17 food pantries and neighborhood centers in 14 different townships in Northern New York. In addition, we have contributed produce to local community dinners in Potsdam and Canton and have provided produce for cooking classes.UShare delivery volunteers offer to drive freshly harvested produce to a pantry that is convenient to them. In keeping with our program’s vision, we try to save fuel and cost by matching volunteers with pantries that are located in areas where they normally have to travel for other reasons. A broad delivery team means we can reach many out-of-the-way places that may otherwise not have access to fresh produce.
We are always in need of produce delivery volunteers! Many think this is the most gratifying aspect of the project
“The most rewarding part for me by far was making deliveries to food pantries. I went on two such trips.... Both pantries seemed well organized and had canned goods, juices, dried food, and such, but little fresh produce. When we came in with all the beautiful fresh vegetables from the garden it really brightened up the tables and the whole atmosphere.... The pantry workers and folks waiting to pick up food all seemed pleased and appreciative of our contribution. It felt good and I wish more UShare folks had a chance to make the actual connection of giving the food to those who need it.”
